Business English:
Presentation Skills - Write
it Down!
Notes and Highlights, or
Full Text?
One
area where people don’t
always agree is whether to
write out your presentation
completely or to just put
the main points on cards.
If you
write the main points on
cards you will likely sound
more natural, interesting
and confident.
But if
you blank completely during
your talk and forget what
you are trying to say, you
need to make sure that your
cards contain enough words
to help you if you lose your
train of thought.
Tips for using cards:
1. Use
postcard-sized cards [larger
"index" cards]
2. Write neatly, clearly and
in big characters
3. Number your cards
4. Write on only one side of
the cards
5. Practice with the cards
several times until you feel
confident and relaxed
If you
write out your presentation
completely, you won’t sound
as natural. However, it’s a good
solution if you are
extremely nervous. Be
careful to NOT just read
your presentation to your
audience.
You may
also need to write out your
presentation if the exact
wording is vitally important
or if you are required to
give out a handout of your
talk.
Tips for
writing it out:
1. Use short sentences for
good speaking NOT good
writing
2. Write on A4 paper and
don’t put too much on each
page
3. Use a large typeface, so
you can see your writing
easily
4. Number each page - again
in BIG typeface
5 .Don’t attach the pages -
so you can move through them
easily
